Electric Car Home Chargers

The place where an electric car or plug-in hybrid is charged the most is at home. In fact, home charging accounts for more than 80% of charging sessions carried out by EV drivers. So it's important to understand the types of charging solutions available, and their advantages.

Home Charging Solutions: Level 1 & Level 2

There are 2 types of charging solutions available for the home, i.e., Level 1 charging and Level 2 charging.

  • Level 1 charging:

    • This corresponds to EV charging completed with the charger usually supplied with the purchase of the car.
    • These chargers plug into a standard 120-volt socket and can charge an electric car in 20 hours, giving it a range of 200 km.

types of electric car charging stations

  • Level 2 chargers:

    • These chargers require a 240-volt outlet, which charges your EV 3 to 7 times faster depending on the model of Level 2 charging station you have, as well as your electric vehicle and its battery capacity. These types of chargers are not usually included with your EV.  Note that in North America, every residential Level 2 charging station is equipped with a SAE J1772 universal connector. To learn more about the different models of SAE J1772 universal connectors available on the market, please visit our online store for Canada and the USA.
    • To benefit from the subsidies available in your area, a charging station typically has to be installed by a master electrician. You can find out more in our A Beginner’s Guide to Electric Cars: How to choose the right home charging station?

We recommend the use of a Level 2 charging station for all electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, to enable you to charge faster and get the most out of your EV's charging capacity.  Provincial and municipal incentives are available in some regions to help cover the cost of purchasing and installing these charging stations.

For more information, consult the government websites below:

The pros of home charging

To take full advantage of all the benefits of charging at home, you need a Level 2 home charging station.

A full battery, 3 to 7 times faster!

electric car charging plug typesThat's right, a Level 2 charger can charge an electric car 5 to 7 times faster, and a plug-in hybrid up to 3 times faster, than a Level 1 charger. So you'll be able to maximize the use of your EV and minimize the number of charging sessions at public charging stations.

Start Your Day Fully Charged

Charging at home is usually done in the evening and overnight. Simply plug your charging connector into your electric car when you get home from work in the evening, and you'll have a full battery the next morning. Since in most cases, an EV's range is sufficient for all your daily commutes, you won't have to stop at public chargers for charging! You can charge your electric car at home while you're eating, playing with the kids, watching TV and sleeping!

Save Big on Charging Costs

Another advantage of home charging is the low cost of electricity compared with the cost of public charging stations and gasoline.

  • The average Canadian driver, who travels around 20,000 kilometers a year, can save up to $2,500 a year in fuel and maintenance costs. To get the lowest rates, charge your electric vehicle between 7pm and 7am on weekdays, and at any time on weekends and holidays. For example, in Quebec, you can calculate the savings you could make with an electric vehicle on the Hydro-Québec website.
  • In the United States, naturally, it depends on the price of electricity and gasoline. Simply compare electricity consumption in kWh/100 miles multiplied by the price per kWh vs. gasoline consumption in gallons/100 miles multiplied by the price per gallon of gasoline. That way, you'll be able to quickly see how much you can save on travel costs.

Electric Car Public Charging Stations

Public charging enables EV drivers to charge their electric cars when they are on journeys that exceed the battery's remaining range. These public charging stations are often located near businesses such as restaurants, shopping centers, parking lots and other public places.
To easily locate them, we recommend using the ChargeHub EV charging map, which is also available on the ChargeHub app, offered free of charge on iOS and Android. This EV charging stations map lets you find all the public charging station locations in North America, see their chargers’ status in real time, create itineraries and much more. We'll be using elements from our electric charger map to make it as simple as possible to explain how electric car charging works, using public charging stations.
There are three main elements to consider when understanding public charging: the different charging levels, the types of charging connectors and the charging networks.

Which Levels of Charging Are Available for Public Charging?

There are three levels of public charging stations for electric cars. As mentioned at the beginning of this guide, all vehicles can be connected to either a Level 1 or Level 2 charging station. These types of chargers have the same charging capacity as those you can install at home.

As for Level 3 charging stations (also known as DCFCs or fast-charging stations), they offer much greater power than Level 1 and 2 stations, and can charge an EV much more quickly. However, some vehicles cannot be charged using Level 3 chargers. So it's very important to know the maximum capacity your electric vehicle's battery can accept.

Level 1 public chargers

A Level 1 charging station plugs into a conventional 120-volt wall socket. This is the charger that usually comes with your EV. It's the slowest charger: you'll need around twenty hours to fully charge your electric vehicle, and several hours for a plug-in hybrid.

Level 2 public chargers

A Level 2 public charging station is the equivalent of a residential charging station installed at home. The majority of public charging stations are Level 2. Please note that RV plugs (14-50) are also considered level 2 chargers.

level 3 charging station cost

Level 3 public chargers (DCFC)

A fast-charging station, also known as a DCFC, DC Fast Chargers, or "level 3," is the fastest way to charge your electric vehicle. It's important to note that not every EV can charge with level 3 chargers.

Choosing the Right Level of Public Charging for Your Electric Car

First of all, we recommend that you avoid Level 1 charging stations, which are far too slow for your needs when on the go. On the other hand, if you want to charge as quickly as possible, we recommend Level 3 fast-charging stations. These charging stations will enable you to achieve a high level of autonomy in a very short time. That said, charging your electric car using a DCFC station is only effective if your EV's battery level is below 80%.

When the battery is charged to more than 80% of its capacity, the charging speed slows down significantly and approaches the charging speed of a Level 2 charging station. If your car’s battery is already charged to 80% or more, it's best to connect your electric car to a Level 2 charging station to take advantage of lower charging costs, or to continue on to your destination. Finally, if time is not a constraint and you plan to stop for several hours, you can opt for Level 2 charging, which is slower but less expensive.

Which connectors are available for public charging?

Level 1 and 2 connectors

The most common connector is the SAE J1772 universal connector. All electric vehicles can be charged with this connector, which is the standard in Canada and the USA (with an adapter for Tesla cars).

Connector: Port J1772
Level: 2
Compatibility: 100% of electric vehicles

Level 3 connectors

For fast-charging stations, CHAdeMO and SAE Combo (also known as CCS for "Combo Charging System") connectors are the most widely used by most charging network operators.

Tesla: No

They are not interchangeable. So a vehicle with a CHAdeMO connector cannot be charged with an SAE Combo CSS connector, and vice versa (similarly, you can't fill up at a diesel pump if you have a gasoline-powered vehicle).

The other connector of interest to some drivers is the Tesla connector, which is only compatible with Tesla-brand cars. The Tesla connector is fitted to certain Level 2 chargers and Tesla Supercharger fast-charging stations. However, a CCS adapter is available for Tesla vehicles, so it's now possible to charge your EV at any fast-charging station. Long EV journeys have never been so easy!

Before going to an EV charging station, it's important to check that the connectors available on site are compatible with your EV. This is particularly important for DCFC Level 3 fast-charging stations, which are not compatible with Tesla-brand cars, unless you buy an adapter, in case the connector is of the CHAdeMO type. Some fast-charging stations may have only a CHAdeMO connector, others only have SAE Combo CCS connectors, and some stations will have both types of connectors. What's more, some plug-in hybrid vehicles are not compatible with Level 3 charging stations.
With the help of our electric car charging stations map, you'll be able to apply the appropriate filters to make sure you only see charging stations with connectors compatible with your electric car. To activate these charging stations, an RFID card or the network's mobile application is generally required.

Electric Car Charging Station Network Operators

To use public chargers properly, you need to familiarize yourself with the various public charging networks. There are several operators of public charging stations in the United States and Canada. However, not all of them are present throughout North America.

How do I charge an EV at a public charging station?

To use a public charging station, you normally need to subscribe to the network that operates and manages the charger. Registration is usually free of charge, but some charging networks charge user fees.

This is why we developed the Chargehub app, to make sure there is no need to register on each network separately, and add funds on several apps in order to charge your EV. Today, it's possible to activate and pay at over 80,000 charging stations in North America, directly via the Chargehub app.

Currently, ChargeHub is compatible with charging stations from the following networks: Circuit électrique, Chargepoint, Co-op Connect, Duke Energy, EVCS, EvGateway, EVolveNY, EVSmart, EcoCharge, Graviti, FPL Evolution, Hypercharge, RechargeÉco, Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro, PHI, Shell Recharge, Stay-N-Charge, SWTCH, Zef Energy, and more to come!

Charging an Electric Car at Work

Workplace charging is very similar to home charging in the way it works. Workplace charging can be offered by employers to their employees. Depending on your commuting habits, workplace charging could meet the majority of your travel needs. When workplace charging is offered, Level 1 or 2 charging stations are generally made available to employees with electric or plug-in hybrid cars, in company parking lots.

The pros of workplace charging

A longer electric range

When combined with home charging, charging at work can easily double your EV's daily electric range, at very low cost, and without having to change your habits. This is particularly interesting for plug-in hybrid cars, since you can use the electric motor over longer distances and save fuel.

Level 2 charging allows you to charge faster, which is particularly interesting for part-time employees, or workplaces where employees are not present all day.

Large Savings on Transportation Costs

Electricity costs for charging at work are often covered by the employer, which means you could charge your EV for free. The employer may also charge a fee for the use of the charger, but the price is often lower than that of a public charger.

Governement Incentives for Workplace Chargers

To encourage the adoption of workplace charging by employers, some governments have set up programs to reduce the cost of purchasing and installing charging stations. However, many employers are unaware of these programs, and it's up to employees driving EVs to tell them about them.

For the United States, we suggest you visit your state's government website.

Now that you've familiarized yourself with charging an electric car or a plug-in hybrid, we suggest you read our guide on how to choose the right home charger for your needs. As more than 80% of your charging will take place at home, it's very important to make the right choice and not choose a charging station  that won't meet your needs.
