Fall in Vermont is unlike anywhere else in North America. Every year, travellers arrive to admire the brilliant colours of the forests, where red maples mix with golden birches and orange beeches. To turn this season into a true escape, nothing beats a well-planned itinerary. Mapping out scenic routes, viewpoints, and convenient stops makes the journey even better.

When to see peak fall colours in Vermont

Fall colours usually begin in mid-September. The first trees to change are those in higher elevations, especially in the Green Mountains. Peak foliage often comes in early October, with a breathtaking wave of colour rolling down into the valleys.

It’s also the perfect time to enjoy fall markets. Pumpkins, apples, maple syrup, and hot cider pair perfectly with your stops along the way. Planning your trip during these weeks guarantees a natural spectacle you won’t forget.

This scenic 45-mile (70 km) route connects Vermont’s capital, Montpelier, to the iconic village of Woodstock, one of the best places to enjoy fall foliage.

Along the way, you’ll pass through Randolph, Bethel, and Royalton. These small towns offer accessible parking, cozy cafés, and trails ideal for a short hike. Several charging stations are located nearby, making it easy to combine charging your EV with a relaxing break.
