Celebrating 3 Years of Passport Hub: North America’s EV Roaming Hub

Passport Hub has emerged as a key solution to accelerate EV roaming penetration in North America, an industry with fragmented charging infrastructure. Streamlining network roaming connections between Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and eMobility Service Providers (eMSPs) such as automakers and fleets is setting a new benchmark for efficiency and scalability in public charging interoperability. As North America’s EV roaming solution, Passport Hub increases payment compatibility and drives massive EV adoption.

Let’s look closer at the journey that has positioned Passport Hub at the forefront of the shift toward accelerated electrification.

In December 2021, ChargeHub took an essential step in solving one of the most pressing challenges in the EV industry: network interoperability. The first roaming integration between Electric Circuit and ChargePoint paved the way for simplified EV roaming across North America.

The connection between the two strategic networks quickly laid the foundation for a more unified solution. This milestone connected two significant networks and opened the doors for creating the first North American-based roaming hub, setting the stage for a more connected, interoperable charging infrastructure. ChargeHub turned the initial integration into what is now Passport Hub by enabling interoperability across a growing number of networks. 

By doing so, Passport Hub progressively allowed drivers to access thousands of chargers using their preferred payment method without managing multiple accounts or subscriptions. By streamlining the charging process, Passport Hub eliminated barriers for  EV drivers, eMSPs, and CPOs, enabling faster, more straightforward connections across the continent.

Since its launch, Passport Hub has rapidly expanded, supporting over 170 live EV roaming connections and compatibility of more than 75% of networked CCS and J1772 chargers in the U.S. and Canada. The platform has become the backbone of an ever-growing payment-compatible charging infrastructure, connecting many partners and delivering frictionless access to EV charging.

Passport Hub has become an essential tool for the industry, streamlining the connections between all parties involved in EV charging. This integration reduces technical complexities, legal hurdles, administrative burdens, and messy financial reconciliation, allowing for faster scaling of EV roaming. 

This solution benefits all actors, from the providers to the end-users. For drivers, it means more straightforward, convenient access to public charging wherever they go.

With key collaborators like Blink Charging, Shell Recharge, BC Hydro, Nissan, Vinfast, Circle K, Lynkwell, Holman, and many more, Passport Hub is leading the way toward a future where charging is seamless, accessible, and reliable. 

Through strategic collaborations, Passport Hub will also improve in the future by simplifying the charging experience. In partnership with Irdeto, ChargeHub is providing the simplest  Plug & Charge onboarding process to streamline the EV charging process further. In a recent end-to-end demo at San Bernardino’s Testival, Irdeto and ChargeHub successfully demonstrated a seamless Plug & Charge session authorized through the Hub, with payment directly linked to a user account.

As over 40 CPOs and eMSPs integrate the platform, Passport Hub is solidifying its role as the foundation of a connected EV ecosystem, helping to scale payment compatibility and meet the growing demand for electrification.
