charging

You won’t receive a physical card after you created your account on ChargeHub. When you sign up on the website and download the app, you have everything you need to use ChargeHub.

ChargeHub is not a charging network but a platform that aggregates all the electric vehicle charging stations in the United States and Canada in one place. It helps the electric car drivers find a charging station, plan their trips and interact with the community. With ChargeHub you can you find a level 2 or a level 3 charging station in a few clicks.

The ChargeHub Map

Electric car drivers will always be able to download the ChargeHub charging stations app and use the charging stations map for free.

When a user adds or updates the information about an electric car charging station, our team always verifies the information before it’s published. The user will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours after placing the request.

live-status-markers

When you see a marker with a green circle showing on the ChargeHub charging stations map, it means at least one port is available at that charging station location. A marker with a red circle means all the ports are busy at that specific charging station location.

A non-networked station won’t have the green or red circle inside its marker. To know if it is available, check the charging station details page, if a user checked-in recently you can ask him if one of the ports is available or if he is leaving soon. You can also verify if someone reported an issue or wrote a comment to know if a charging station is defective. To help other users, check-in when you are at a charging station, write a comment or report an issue when it happens.

There are 3 different markers:

charging station Light blue marker: Level 1 charging station

home charging Dark blue marker: Level 2 charging station

charging stations Yellow marker: DC Fast Charging Station (Level 3 charging station)

For more info about the different type of charging stations, check out our charging guide.

The map on the ChargeHub App lists all the public charging stations across North America. That means our map is a search tool that enables the EV drivers to locate any public chargers from a simple mobile app or web browser. We do not install public charging stations. Our mission is to improve the charging experience of EV drivers by giving them access to all the information in one place.

Charging Stations

All the charging stations on the ChargeHub website come with a SAE J1772 connector, which is compatible with all electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in North America. Tesla cars are equipped with a different connector, but a Tesla - SAE J1772 adapter is included with every Tesla.

The biggest advantage of owning a level 2 charging station is the ability to charge your EV up to five times quicker than with the car's charger (110V charger). This means that your vehicle will be fully charged every morning and that a short charge will allow you to go farther.

Charging stations usually differentiate themselves in terms of power, cable length, aesthetic, and if they can be installed outside. In order to choose the right station, it's important to know your needs. We encourage you to read our guide on choosing your station to help you choose your station.

Smart chargers give you access to a variety of functions that others do not. For example, some stations allow you to see your charging data, remotely start your charging, and control the access to your charger with an app on your smartphone.

The power needed depends on the power acceptance of your vehicle or your electrical installation. You can visit this page to find the optimal charging power recommended for your car. A 40A (9.6 kW) charger is sufficient for most vehicles. A 40A charging station must be installed on a 50A circuit, while a 48A or 50A charging station requires a 60A circuit. Choosing a more powerful charging station can be a smart long-term investment, as future EV models may support higher charging power than current ones.

Charging time depends on the vehicle being charged. In most cases, a 30A station allows you to charge up to five times faster than 110V charging, whereas a 40A station allows up to 7 times faster charging.

Most home charging stations are made for indoor and outdoor installation and work well from -30°C to 50°C (-22°F to 122°F). If you plan on charging outside, we recommend that you verify this aspect since some chargers are only made for inside purposes.

We strongly suggest that you get a cable that is at least 18 ft. long so you can charge your car no matter how it is parked (front or behind).

While stations installed outside are more easily stolen, especially portable models, most of them can be locked with a padlock to prevent it from being stolen. If you want to install your charging station outside, we highly recommend you to choose a station with an anti-theft feature.

Charging station warranties usually last three years and cover the charging station as well as its cables.

Some station models are portable and can be plugged to avoid having to purchase a second charging station. You will need to have an outlet installed in every location in order to plug the station there.

ChargeHub's Store

ChargeHub is based in Montréal. Our online store serves customers across Canada, offering a selection of EV chargers and accessories.

Most of the chargers and accessories in our store come from Canadian manufacturers. You can also filter products to see which ones are made in Canada, making it easier to find locally sourced options.

Ordering with ChargeHub

Depending on the selected shipping method, your station should arrive within 1 to 3 or 4 to 7 days, depending on the station.

On any ChargeHub product page, select the station model that you wish to purchase and order to be taken to the checkout. You will usually receive your station within three days after ordering. Once your station has been purchased, you can claim your government rebate, if applicable.

Subsidies

Some provinces offer subsidies for the purchase and installation of a level 2 home charging station:

To claim your rebate, you must fill out a government form and send it yourself. ChargeHub helps you through this process by sending you the relevant form with your station's order confirmation.

Installation

ChargeHub recommends that you get a master electrician to install your charging station. This is a requirement for receiving your government rebate on the installation.

A breaker has to protect 120% of its charge. Therefore, its size depends on the amperage of your charging station. For a 30A charging station, you need a 40A breaker, whereas a 40A charger requires a 50A breaker. If you don't have enough space on your breaker panel, you can ask an electrician to reorganize your circuits or decrease the amperage of your charging station. We recommend that you contact an electrician for a safe installation.

For a 30A charging station with a NEMA 6-50 plug, the required cabling is a copper 8-2, while a 40A charger with a NEMA 14-50 plug requires a copper 6-3 or an aluminium 4-3 ACWU. We recommend that you contact an electrician for a safe installation.

For a simple scenario where the breaker panel is in the same room as the charging station, you can expect a cost of around $250 for 1 hour of work. For a more complicated scenario where the breaker panel is in the basement and the charging station is outside, you might expect a cost of around $800-$900 for 5 hours of work. The only way to get an accurate estimate for your installation is by contacting an electrician. A rebate on the installation may also be available in your area.
