Incentive programs for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Canada

There are several incentive programs available to help Canadians make the transition to an electric car, a plug-in hybrid EV or a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. These rebates are normally managed by one of the three main levels of government: federal, provincial, or municipal. These programs are only valid for residents of the concerned territory.

If you are looking for more savings, we also have a list of incentives for the acquisition and installation of a level 2 home charging station in Canada.

The iZEV Program in Canada: A federal rebate for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles

In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, the government of Canada has decided to introduce incentives to encourage the acquisition of zero-emission vehicles such as electric cars, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

The tax incentive is applicable if the vehicle meets the program requirements:

  • Electric or plug-in hybrid passenger car with a base model MSRP of less than $55,000. The more expensive version of the vehicle must not have an MSRP that exceeds $65,000.
    OR
  • A station wagon, pickup truck, sport utility vehicle, minivan, van or specialty vehicle with a base model MSRP of less than $60,000. The more expensive version of the vehicle must not have an MSRP that exceeds $70,000.

For more information on individual models, see the list of all eligible vehicles by model year and version.

The program offers two types of incentives:

  1. All battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and long-range plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, all with an electric range of 50 kilometers or more, can receive $5,000.
  2. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) with an electric range of less than 50 kilometers can receive $2500.

The Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV) Program will continue until March 31, 2025 (or until available funds are exhausted).

The grant is applied directly by the car dealer at the point of sale. The dealer is responsible for completing the required documentation to receive the incentive.

Full details of the program are available on the Government of Canada website.
